Banana Republic
I've just read this post over at Gates of Vienna, on how changes to the voting system introduced by the last Labour government have reduced the Mother of Parliaments to a banana republic. Some shocking stuff in there that I didn't know. Read it - it's frightening.

I think we're ahead of the game in Scotland though Richard. Not that you will hear anything about it down south. The Glenrothes by election is infamous. The postal votes mysteriously reached over 6,000. The Labour candidate won by 6,000 votes. The voters register went 'missing' so no one yet knows who these mysterious voters were.
ReplyDeleteAn 'independent' inquiry was carried out by Labour who found nothing to report.
But it's all small fry. We have councillors on £30K a year who no one knows what they do or where they work. Paid for over 20 years.
Gordon's fiefdom North of the border! Yes, there are many stories to be told about corruption up your way. No-one mention Stephen Purcell, right?
ReplyDeleteWhen the Commonwealth have to send election monitors, and they aren't happy with what they see, we know we're in trouble.
End the right to the postal vote unless you can prove you are physically unable to attend the polling station. Vote in person and bring ID. Indelible marking of voters. Make it an offence imprisonable for life to tamper in any way with the electoral process. After all, if we don't have a democracy, what do we have? Stealing a country's right to a fair election of its leaders is at least as bad as murdering an individual.
