Arid Archipelago Phonographic Recordings
Sod the Desert Island Discs thing for a minute: this is just for fun.
John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra from 1971, with the amazing Billy Cobham bashing out a complex 9/8 drum riff that still has me fascinated 39 years later.
'Vital Transformation'.

I like this. It is certainly better than later Mahavishnu Orch material. I have been listening to "Inner Worlds" (1976)which by comparison, sounds over produced and like the soundtrack of a blaxploitation movie.
ReplyDeleteI have this one and the following one, Birds of Fire, but I don't know Inner Worlds. Perhaps I should steer clear of it. I'm not a big fan of jazz, but this fusion stuff gets to me, especially if they use weird time signatures. And JMcL is a superb instrumentalist.
