Ride To Work Day, 20 June 2011

OK, it's an American idea, but I like it.

The idea is that everyone who owns a bike or scooter rides it to work that day, to demonstrate:
  • The number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians.

  • That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life.

  • That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities.

  • That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation.

  • That motorcycling is a social good.

I wonder if it will get any support over here? I'm on the day shift that day, so I will certainly be riding to work. Anyone else?

  1. I'll be out. I'm out every day. (Well, I wimp out in the rain and ice) I hope to see lots of other riders on the rode on the 20th!

  2. I ride most days to work, but I will spread the word and I will be riding.

  3. I bicycle everywhere. Does that qualify?

  4. James - of course it does. You beat us hands-down in the high-greenery stakes, and two wheels is two wheels however you look at it.

    Brady/Oz -good stuff, keep spreading!

  5. Every day's a ride to work day, far as I'm concerned, unless there's deep snow or ice. I don't know if it demonstrates much in the way of social good to people of Sussex, but I always try to look like I'm enjoying myself even when they're eating my dust...!

If all goes well, the 3rd Monday in June will be the first day my travel-stained VFR accompanies me to work after a two-week scenic route blast down to San Marino and back. If that happens to be a positive demonstration of the innate brilliance of two wheels at the same time, I'll be delighted!

  6. So what happened there, then? This entire post disappeared all day, and Blogger seems to have eaten the several comments that had been made against it. Spooky, almost like the Bermuda Triangle! Still, I'll try and repeat more or less what I said as a) I'm sure it was witty and b) it'll look odd if the original comment ever surfaces and isn't quite similar...

Every day is a ride to work day as far as I'm concerned, excluding those that involve heavy snow or big ice. I'm not sure whether the lovely people of Sussex appreciate that as being much of a social good, although I do always try and look as if I'm enjoying myself...even when they're eating my dust!

If all goes well, though, the 3rd Monday in June will be the first time my travel-stained VFR takes me to work after a two week scenic route blast to San Marino and back. If being part of RtW day also serves as a demonstration of the innate brilliance of two-wheelers, I'll be delighted.

  7. As I understand it, Blogger went down big time for a couple of days. Your previous comment came through to me by email, and it did appear for a while, but then all I could get was 'service not available'. All posts and comments since the 'maintenance update' have been removed and will be reinstated in due course, according to Blogger. But I think their target date is some time in June. The miracles of technology, eh?

To all who commented: thank you, and I hope your words will reappear before too long. If not, keep reading. There's bound to be something to piss you off before too long.

  10. My bikes are my soul form of transport, yet I will not ride on this day - I'll be in London re-visiting my old haunts for old time's sake on an anniversary of age. But I'll be watching out. Its funny how things like this, and "The Ride of Respect" just wouldn't be the same if it was a `drive` of respect. Yet another reason that makes bikes special.
