Decisions ...

Just as I had been doing a bit of thinking and decided that the bike trip was going to be one of two options:
  • Four corners of the UK (the complete coastline is either 3,000 or 4,000 miles, depending on how close to the coast you make your route, but the four geographic extremes would be doable in a week)
  • Millau Viaduct and back, via a few Alpine passes and some interesting French bits

I had a conversation with Anna and she came up with another idea, which seems to be rather better than either of the above.

Anna knows a guy in Denmark (long story, something to do with games played over the interweb) who is about my age and a stone-bonkers biker. She mentioned my proposed trip to him, and he has offered a place on his campsite in Denmark for a week. Not only that, but he has also offered to take a week off work and show me round the country. How can I refuse an offer like that?

  1. I'm not sure you can. Unless you can summon up a pathological fear of Vikings, or something.
It's offers like that which kinda define the biker spirit to me.

  2. I think I have decided to give this a go. It's the kind of offer that doesn't come along every day, even if I have never met the guy before. I don't know if it will be some middle-aged commune of Danish nerds (he owns a fully-restored Nimbus, for example) or the Danish equivalent of the Bulldog Bash, complete with shotguns and highway shoot-outs. As you say, part of the 'code' is being open enough to find out. After all, what's the worst that could happen?

What has really convinced me is another friend who has mailed me a list of Good Things To See In Denmark. It includes some 10thC historical stuff, including some rune stones (who could resist the Runestone of Gorm?). I did some work on English runestones a long time ago, and I would be fascinated to see these. I think that has tipped the balance. If I can combine a bit of partying with a dose of Viking heritage, what's not to like?
