Music mystery

OK, have a go at this. Well-known band having a bit of a larkabout.

Name the band.

For bonus points, name the singer, the year and the flip-side.

No Googling!

  1. I can't listen to audio at work so I will have a stab in the dark - Arctic Monkeys?

  2. Fleetwood Mac in Peter Green days; might have to forgo the bonus points though. Pre-'72 as far as the year goes is my guess.

I've noticed an ongoing Bonzo theme in the blog headers recently: has there been a recent revisiting of old albums at Nowhere Towers, perchance?

  3. Near enough. It was Fleetwood Mac all right, although the label gave the band as Earl Vince and the Valiants. Jeremy Spencer was the composer and singer, and a fine faux-Elvis he made too. It was issued as the B-side of Man Of The World in 1969, just as the band were leaving their blues days behind and entering a more mainstream field.

Your Bonzo observation is correct. I had to drive daughter no 1 to her graduation recently, so I put the boxed set in the car, as she is a big fan (also of Molesworth, funny kid). I have been singing them in my head ever since. Well spotted - I wondered if anyone would notice!

  4. I'd be useless as a member of your PubQuiz team, never in a milion years would I've considered F-M.

The intro sounded Shads-like, before the vocals kicked in.

IMHO Stevie Nicks improved the vocals & aesthetics!

  6. Joe - I'm a big fan of Stevie Nicks: easy on the eye, and her vocals on 'Gold Dust Woman' send a chill down the spine even today.

Paul - thanks for the tip. Never 'eard of 'im, but I've checked out the song samples on Amazon. Good stuff, even though I have never been a fan of Elvis. 'Voodoo Chile' is a hoot.
