Norwich Evening News gets it

Over these anti-EU protests (sorry, I'll be back to normal stuff soon), I said that there wasn't much media interest. Seems I was wrong. One regular reader (you know who you are) took the trouble to scan and post some stuff from his local evening paper. Seems like fair reporting to me. Thank you, Mr X. Click for bigness.

  1. Words pretty much fail me as to what an inditement of modern society the need for these protests encompasses. It really does appear to be a mentality of "Someone, somewhere seems to be having some fun - better put a stop to that right now. Just because we can".

Time to hope that this is the issue where, nationally, we are prepared to draw the line and refuse to have any more freedom and liberty removed from us. I'm not especially optimistic, but if the government is hell-bent on dragging my once-perfectly-acceptable activities into whole new rafts of criminal behaviour - well, I guess I'll just have to be a criminal. I'm just not sure where or how that stops once you have accepted - as an individual - that the law is no longer worthy of respect. One thing I'm fairly certain of, though, is that it is not encouraging much in the way of improved social cohesion.

  2. Ah yes, H L Mencken's definition of Puritanism: "The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy". A pox on them all. However, your later remark:

"if the government is hell-bent on dragging my once-perfectly-acceptable activities into whole new rafts of criminal behaviour - well, I guess I'll just have to be a criminal"

is an important one. It's exactly how I feel about some things. I feel much less of a law-abiding citizen that I ever used to when I was younger. How many people feel the same? And then sheep and lambs come to mind. It's a slippery slope, and I don't think those at the top know what they have started.
